Presentation Outline

Proposal:
Urban Revitalization (Redevelopment) within the area of High Population Density

I: Characteristics in High Population Density Areas (China):

A: Small Amount Of Public Space And Intensive Use Of Public Space
High population density leads to high building density, and contributes to the limited area of public open space. And the public space will serve far more people than it could support.

B: Lack Of Urban Nodes As The Public Spaces
Congestion makes the street disorderly and fearfully fluid, the urban nodes such as squares or little parks offer refuges for the relatively tranquility and slower pace of activity.
The lack of urban nodes also causes the visual boredom and reduces the legibility of the environment.

C: Ambiguous Boundary Between The Public, The Semi-public and The Private
Tight private spaces push urban residents to utilize public or semi-public areas as private spaces. That disturbs the normal activities in the public places more or less.

D: Linear Public Spaces
Streets are used as main public spaces much more than the squares, due to the residents’ behavior pattern and the government administration.

E: Unbalanced Distribution Of Social Housing
Such distribution causes the gaps between the different social classes.

Question:
What methodology should be used to combine the following issues within the approach of urban design in a densely inhabited environment?
Providing Public Spaces In A Tight Supply Of Land  (Ideal Typologies Of Public Spaces)
Providing Housing For Different Social Classes
Addressing Society’s Demand Of Maximum Economic Gain
Accommodating Residents’ Behavior Pattern And Local Situations
Improving Social Interaction, Environmental Identity, Territoriality, Efficiency Of Space

II: Issues in urban revitalization:

A: Property values and environmental qualities have deteriorated for various reasons, such deterioration is detrimental to public interest in having a viable core city area around which the life in the community may center. Steps which could remedy existing conditions, halt further deterioration and maintain public''s interest.

B: Lack of housing near commercial complex for all income groups who will become the supporting "backbone" for commercial activities

C: Inconvinient transportation and lack of public spaces around commercial complex, which provide pleasant environment  not only for buying goods but also of satisfying the human social needs of communication, make commercial complex less attactive to the people.

D: Lack of developments which do create additional activities, bringing spectators and visitors into the area and thereby giving additional support to the existing commercial areas and encouraging the building of some new ones.

E: The geographic area of planning has to be large enough to include long-range plans for all major functions.

Question:
What is the necessary ingredients to make the area revive again for people''s living, and how to make these ingredients cooperate to achieve the goal?

why a,b,c and d? they represent different people respectively or different topics?  the topic you are talking about seems to be platitude even in domestic classes and chinese students don''t like such so called "nonsensical topics".what about your classmates?
as i know, urban planning in U.S.A commonly focuses on the public administration, international political and economic problems such as geopolitics and apartment problems and so on. what about your university?

Issue I indicates the existing characteristics of the public spaces in China,
Issue II indicates the outlines which should be noticed while engaging the urban redevelopment project.
As we know, urban planning is totally different from urban design. my topic is about urban design, not planning.
Sorry, i havent told u, my program is architecture not planning, so my concertration is urban design.

And i dont know what u mean by "chinese students don''t like such so called ..."
